Dear reader,
Welcome to The Daily Princetonian’s seventh annual Frosh Survey! Our team has spent months collecting, analyzing, and interpreting responses from 610 first-years from the Class of 2030 to share their story.
Our survey was conducted over a period of 18 days, from July 13 until July 31. Periodically throughout those days, the ‘Prince’ emailed a Google Form to all members of the Class of 2030 with a Princeton email address — a total of 1,483 students. 610 students responded, resulting in a 41.1 percent response rate.
Each question on the survey was optional and, on certain sensitive questions, respondents could explicitly decline to answer. All responses were fully anonymous and multiple submissions were disabled. To protect student anonymity and data, only editors of the Data team accessed the raw numbers, and none made any effort to identify any individual freshmen.
We exercised discretion when presenting the data, looking at the implications of various graphs to ensure privacy at each point. Some cross-analyses were omitted due to their small sizes in an effort to avoid identifying individual participants. We did not calculate the significance test results of data drawing from two or more questions, and we did not weigh responses based on demographics. In our narratives, “freshman,” “incoming freshman,” “freshmen,” “respondent,” “student,” or similar phrases refer to those who answered that given question.
In the spirit of transparency, this report is likely a little out of date. Between when we sent out the survey and now, some respondents have likely changed their major, had their financial situation change, or had their first drink. Our survey constitutes a look at the Class of 2030 as it existed in July, prior to their first experiences at Princeton.
Thank you for taking the time to read, engage with, and interrogate our work. We hope that the survey can serve to reflect the stories of this unique class. We also hope that it is, and continues to be, fun.
Regards,
Madeline Wadsworth
