The Hellfire Protest

Photos and text by Jasper Waldman

On a bright day in mid-September, self-identifying Christian protestors appeared on Washington Road with large homophobic, racist, and sexist signs warning of “hellfire.”

They elicited virulent reactions from students.
Attempts to argue and reckon fuel the hate group,
but when students counterprotested, the balance of power flipped.
The extremist group engaged with students, but the space between them and students became heated — like “hellfire”:
crowded,
entropic,
and provocative.
